You might have never heard of Miller Owensby, but his legacy lives on at Parkway Barber & Styling. Owensby was the original owner of Parkway Barber, which he opened in 1951 in the exact location of where the shop currently sits. In 1952, Pete Telmanik, who had dreamed of owning his own barber shop since he was 12 or 13 years old, began working for Owensby at the shop.
Telmanik continued to work for Parkway Barber, and eventually purchased the shop in the early 1970s when Owensby retired. In 1995, when he decided to retire, Telmanik sold the shop to current owner Charlotte Garmon. Around that same time, the Parkway Shops were undergoing a renovation, and they had to move the shop across the parkway (to the spot where Giant Eagle’s produce area now sits). Telmanik continued to work for Garmon once a week for about the next eight years, cutting hair for his loyal clients who stayed with him.
Ten years later, in 2005, Parkway Barber & Styling was once again forced to move across the parkway as Giant Eagle purchased the rest of the west side of the property in an expansion effort. It almost seems fitting that Parkway Barber & Styling is back home in its original location, continuing to provide quality haircuts in the latest styles; hot lather neck and facial shaves; and excellent customer service to hundreds of loyal clients.
Owensby probably never realized how successful his humble barber shop would become. Parkway Barber & Styling’s success can be attributed to its clients, who continue to remain loyal to a barber shop that’s known for taking good care of its customers..
